Server history?
#1
I'm interested to know when the CityRP server was launched and if it was popular early on, or took time to develop. If it was launched in 2008 then which month did it start? I understand that an early map (2013 atleast) was rp_evocity_v2d, but was that the map at launch? Has the gameplay culture changed over time? Were there multiple FearlessRP servers back then?

Hey Hudson, I think I recognise you from the work you've done on other communities with your archive.

Not many people will really know much about all the way to 2008, most of us who've been around for ages and are still here joined around 2011-2013. There have been posts in the past though explaining the history of FL, I'll try see if I can find any but I'm sure I'll likely be beaten to it by others. I've also moved your thread over to discussions, as it suits there a bit better.

I think I can sit this one out.

Having read Hudson's overview of Fearless history, I think it's safe to say that pretty much all the big things have been covered. It's quite impressive to see all of this laid out, and it's nice to see some folks out there interested in recording the history of communities such as Fearless for a bigger audience.

For anyone interested in reading Hudson's take on Fearless history: click here - it's a good read.

The best thing I can find about FLs history from around when it was made is this thread from one of the founders: https://fearlessrp.net/showthread.php?tid=4382

It explains the creation and early days quite well.

I can say for certain that the server was extremely popular when I first played in 2012, there were three servers in total on three different maps (v2d, v33x and v2p). All were very populated if not full, getting into V2D was especially difficult as this was considered the primary "server" or "map" for years. V33x slowly became the primary server and V2D died off. By 2015 V33x was given 75 slots (all the others were 50) due to it being more popular, V2D  became quite empty and V2P was extremely dead. Three servers became two in 2015 due to V2P being empty all the time (https://fearlessrp.net/showthread.php?tid=60650). The second server had several experiments, the most known being Littletown (https://fearlessrp.net/showthread.php?tid=80357) which was essentially CityRP but made for smaller populations and without vehicles. The server was very popular at first but quickly died off and had a replacement vote less than a month after (https://fearlessrp.net/showthread.php?tid=81208). V5P won the vote replaced the main server (https://fearlessrp.net/showthread.php?tid=82443) with V4B1 being the second. V2D did make a return in Feburary 2018 (https://fearlessrp.net/showthread.php?tid=85304) but this was short lived. The second server was shut down for good after it became clear Fearless can no longer support two at once with decent population. Since then the main server has been on a wild ride of maps, with it changing every 3-6 months due to players getting bored of the current.

To your question of if gameplay culture has changed over time, yes. Since the start "aggressiveRP" was very dominant on the server. This has died down over the past two years to almost nothing due to the team clamping down on toxicity and many of those who considered themselves part of that group being banned. Even today "aggressiveRP" and "passiveRP" are considered two primary sides to the server, the first essentially being people who shoot eachother and base and the latter being people who prefer unique, often detailed roleplays which don't involve violence. The server nowadays is a lot less divided, with the two different sides no longer really existing as players often do a mix of both. The groups which only did "aggressiveRP" are long gone since toxicity got stamped out and rules became stricter regarding that type of gameplay.

There are a few key events that I can see are missing from your archive, the biggest of all being the split that occurred in 2015. To keep it brief, this event was essentially the majority of the team and a lot of the community at the time demanding one of the current SAs, Temar, be given owner or else they'd make their own community and leave. This was triggered due to a lot of controversial decisions such as SoulRipper overruling the team on a ban and the team also investigating just how much money SoulRipper was making from Fearless which he was keeping 100% of. This was done in the form of a public announcement, all threads related to this were later moved to hidden subforums by SoulRipper to hide it. SoulRipper refused their demands of giving up owner and they split into another community called Limelight Gaming. The split led to the entire team having to essentially be built up again from almost nothing and led to a few controversial decisions such as all previous bans being wiped to try restore population and almost everyone being promoted as long as they played and had decent hours. Things were very chaotic for a bit with some who moved to the other community coming on FL with the intention to try mess things up, they did calm down eventually though. Limelight did make an agreement with SoulRipper that allowed them to use the 2015 Fearless Gamemode but not use the database. Limelight did shut down their CityRP server last year after people stopped playing and their revival attempts failed, they were however quite popular initially after the split and remained popular for a few years after.

Another big event is the owner swap that occurred in March 2020, where SoulRipper stepped down as Owner due to him lacking the time needed to try and revive the server. He let people apply for owner for a month or so and eventually gave it to Divey who was a Super Admin at the time. SoulRipper was the owner of Fearless from 2008 up till 2020. This owner swap is considered controversial with a lot of people both leaving the community due to it, it was pretty chaotic for a bit. A month after (in April), the data loss occurred which had the server down for just over a week which I can see mentioned in your archive. All threads related to this time are lost as a result of this data loss.

The event server does also still exist, it is just only used for special events with approval and we've been more strict with it due to a general focus on main-server events to address the lower population recently. An example of the event server being used recently is Squid Game that took place in November last year: https://fearlessrp.net/showthread.php?tid=99327

EDIT: In the interest of the archive and because both threads were public originally, I've moved the two main threads related to the 2015 mass strike/resignation back into announcements from the hidden subforum they were in. They shouldn't really have been censored in the first place.

Initial Public Resignation: https://fearlessrp.net/showthread.php?tid=63094
Owner Response: https://fearlessrp.net/showthread.php?tid=63114

It's quite amazing to see how far Fearless has developed over the years. There are many videos on YouTube of Fearless CityRP that are worth a look at.

I often wonder what could have been done differently. Somewhere along the way the need for creativity during roleplay disappeared.

While I was one of the people who resigned in 2015 during the mass resignation, I am still proud of how far Fearless has developed and have fond memories of this community.
