Religion

Let's not have another thread closed due to religion. Stay on topic and discuss the OP.

I'm not religious for the record, I simply don't believe in a god and don't have any faith. Not sure if I wish I was or not either, wonder if it would change my perspective on life and my decisions.. hm.

And what proof do you have of your God, exactly?
If you say the Quran I'll burst out laughing, thats like saying comic books prove Spiderman is real

You better not argue with this psycho, last time he had argument about his religion, he threatened to behead someone

I am a muslim and I believe in Allah (same word for god).
I am not strict religious, that means I don't pray always or do something for the religion.
But I am fasting a month. No food no drinks, nothing until the time came, where everybody can eat in the religion.
Alot of people say god doesn't excist, but tell me why? Because he can't offer the things what we want.
I believe in god because I have a life, a life given by god.
Who was the first person in this world or who was the second person in this world? And why did they have a life? Who made this world or who mades this system of life.
No one can awnser, we can only believe. Believe what other people say. But if we believe in nothing, does it worth?
Many people say god is the only one, and I think so too. But I would also say believe in something than nothing.

Your mere existence is proof.

Having a normal discussion about religion is simply too much of a task for some people, shame really.
People in this thread act as people who do, or dont, believe in a religion have to explain themselves while its none of their business in the first place. I dont mind explaining it but its a bit sad to be called “weak minded” or an idiot if a person decides to explain his reasons.

Yeah, if you blindly follow atheism because you're an "intellectual" and put everyone else down because they don't believe what you do, aren't you the exact same as the people you claim to be against?

Personally, I don't have a belief in any gods but I have a lot of experience with people who do. I plan on working in care and one of the core principles of that is respecting others and their beliefs, this isn't something that's hard to do unless you are honestly looking for conflict.

If you focus on the individual level of religious beliefs you'll find that most people who follow religion are very moral and kind to everyone. However, I'm also a sociology student and religion on a national or international level can easily be seen as a agent of socialisation and control. Looking at religion from a historical point of view you can see examples of this, such as small towns and villages in Europe which were likely to have one priest or vicar, this man would be highly respected in the community but would also be one of the few men that was literate and could read Latin, this meant he would be able to read the bible. The priest could "read" anything and say it was from the bible, no one could tell any different as translating the bible from Latin was strictly forbidden, this lead to the priest having almost total control over the community as they truly believed in God - there was no alternative to them.

You can see from this perspective how religion can be used to control the masses, however, religion also lead to extremely moral societies with values around sharing and goodwill. I really recommend staying away from the "is god real" argument and instead focus on the effects religion has had on the world - some positive and some negative.
