From 24GB ram to 64GB ram and from 200GB to 4TB harddisk. CPU more recent too.

There are ways to defend againts small DDoS attacks even without expansive mitigation systems. I did a few things in my time when I had to protect a server hosting a big website. Defending Apache is very different than defgending a source server however.
I read somewhere that you already have some protections in place but I have no idea what kind of protections. In any case, there are specialists on this subject and it may be worthwhile to get in touch with one.
