Should Teacher come back?
#1
This is a discussion inspired by JackZ's suggestion. It is not a suggestion in of itself.

Why should the teacher rank be readded?:

To begin with, nobody is getting RPP anymore, admins nowadays do their job more than thinking more along the lines of giving out RPP which was why in this modern day version of FL the teacher rank was so good.

For starters, it will instantly push people to start passive roleplaying again and will actually allow people to progress within the community earning more RPP to allow them to have access to the rewards put in place for those who earn them and put the work in to earn them.

Teachers were also great at helping people both in OOC and in the help and support section as they were dedicated to their role.

Just give teacher to the right people, and everything will be fine. Maybe instead of having to apply for teacher, now people are selected, like how TA works.

Guidelines should still be in place for the teachers so too many rewards are not handed out etc.

Admins, before putting -support (if you are) please remember that most of you are the ones that are making it a fact that this rank needs to be in the game mode, as RPP's are becoming too rare, I agree they should be rare, but they're going extinct.
Kind Regards,

No, the people who do want it to return are either under the illusion of the teacher rank on this server being anything more than just a stepping stone to staff or they themselves are well-aware and are planning to push for staff. We have OOC, we have the forums help & support section, pointless bringing that rank back just for some howler monkey beggars to take up the slots and sit dormant as they wait for the almighty purple-tag.

First and foremost I don't think anyone can argue against the fact that the Teacher rank is not a necessity. Every single rank on Fearless exists for it to run smoothly and the community can still run and thrive without the rank. Roleplay points are not dead although some people would like to believe. If you check the point page a lot have been given out recently and removing the Teacher rank while V2D was our server was not a good idea because passiverp was dead even with the Teacher rank because the lack of freedom of space and creativity with the buildings that the map offered. Meaning points were in a decline anyway due to a lack of people roleplaying (as opposed to the high quantities of aggressive dupes on the map).

I personally and I think a lot of people can agree with me that ranks aren't really something that are good. I don't really like the idea of people being 'above' anyone and I only agree with the ranks we have currently because as I previously stated, they are needed for the server to run properly. The Teacher rank or any other rank that has been suggested since as a 'replacement' for the role puts people above other people. When it came to accepting Teachers it was much more than simply 'do they know the rules'. Because they are apart of the team it's about their attitude, how they represent the community, can they be trusted with more information, can they be trusted with commands etc. and so really anyone can help anyone, but only a select few can be trusted with what comes with the role - When really, anyone can help anyone no matter what role they have. Whether it's OOC, PM or being an admin and teaching a rule breaker how to avoid breaking rules rather than banning them (which happens more than you may think).

You could argue then, well why don't you make the Teacher applications solely for the community to decide or at least let them have a big input? Again, first of all the Teacher rank still puts individuals on a pedestal and gives them lots of rewards over a normal player. But with the Teacher applications being public to the community it has always caused more hate for people who are applying, either by players accusing them of brown nosing up to the staff team or laughing at the fact that they've applied for the 5th time. And of course the embarrassment that came with being denied of the position in the first place. Along with this the staff team looks at things from a team perspective in the sense that 'will they genuinely be good for the role?' and while I'm not saying some community members don't do this, but a large portion of the community are bound to be supporting their friends for the role and -supporting the people they have beef with and with that point Fearless already has enough hatred towards others in terms of the courthouse constantly being people trying to get 'revenge player reports' on each other.

We're trying to push for a community full of people open to help, rather than a select few. And it just so happened that a lot of the people who had a knowledge of the rules or at least were a role model to the community didn't even want to apply for the role because they themselves didn't see a need in the role. We should be open to help players and not expect a physgun colour, a part of the team page, a symbol, extra props and more just for... being a nice person.

Yes

Most people play on this server only because they want to be staff one day because it feels nice to have power over people. It makes the reality we face outside the server less shitty.
Veterans come back to re-live the staff days because of this
Some staff members are afraid to abdicate their power because of this.
There's no way i'm going to believe the to make the server better that's why i do it, a 15 year old had more sense than some of the current members do when he was staff.
Don't believe me? why not give developers admin powers, they have more power over the server with access to the server files that the admins don't have bar one, because shared power is less power.
Why not add the rank back. You all want it back because it's your chance to be staff.

Right if it's not what you want.
Just remember where some of you came from, admins.

Also remember how most of you got your RPP's.
It was alright for your generation, getting RPP's semi easily, but now you've got loads for others they should be extremely rare? I'm sorry but these new players don't have ANY role models for RP.

It's either get admins to start focusing on actual RP a little more and be role models, or get teacher back.

I dont like how some administrators say 'we dont need it anymore' when we clearly do. With an exception of a few admins i have rarely seen a team i associated less with roleplaying then currently.

Divey brings up a few points that are valid but those arent dealbreakers for me. I find it very assumptive to say 'omg they just do it for the power'. We have a good server with a big playerbase, so what if there are players who want to invest a little more time in the server while helping others? Just because you would only do it for the rank, doesnt mean others have the exact same reason to become a teacher.

The argument that you dont need a rank to help others is valid, but i see it more then as a rank, its an endorsement from FL saying 'this guy knows what he is talking about and isnt trolling you'. Ill give you an example: there are players who, if a 0 hour player approaches them, offer them a 'once in a lifetime deal' of 1 pistol for the small price of 10K, and because its their lucky day theyll get some free pistol ammo with it as well. This borderline scam is just annoying to deal with and if you find out that your whole fortune has been spent on an overpriced pistol youll get dissapointed/distrustive of community members. I feel teachers, who have a visible rank of trust, can fight this kind of behaviour and showing new players around without them having to be afraid to be screwed over.

Hell, give teachers more powers! Ive seen servers where i could do '@ i am new to this server' and a teacher-like person TP's to them to show them around on the map, showing them the possibilities and rules, it was an amazing introduction to the server for me and ive played on that server almost as much as FL. It wasnt an issue on that server, i dont see why it should be on FL and i dont know why it has always to be such a power struggle here, its a Gmod server where, in the end, everyone is just here to have fun.

Are you going to reply to any of my points? The thread at the start stated that people shouldn't just say no so why not the same for yes?

5 out of the current admins have not been Teacher which is a large quantity and it doesn't matter if they were or not. Some people were perfect for the role of Teacher and so stayed that way and some managed to prove themselves and got Mod/Trial. Sure it gave them more exposure, but certainly thats a negative thing for the majority of the community apart from the select few who get it and feel like they may be in with a chance of getting staff.

As long as you're active, mature and follow the rules - you're in with the chance. It's really that simple. (It's also a bit of a joke that we're bringing up the staff/teacher connection in this thread. It really just goes to show)

If you guys look at the point page a large quantity of points have been given out so I'm not sure whether this sort of propaganda has come from. If you aren't getting any maybe you should start roleplaying and maybe do something new and exciting that you haven't done before so it's not just the chore of doing a restaurant RP for the 20th time. And talk about no rolemodels? Lesanka was a rolemodel years before she got Teacher, the same goes for RockDad and more.

And I'm not sure if you've been on to witness them but we have a large quantity of staff who in my eyes are rolemodels, whether it's Forgee with his casino, Siphon with his police rp, JoeJoe with his magazine or Sparx with his creepy cultist roleplays. If you look for them you'll be able to find them. And that's just the people in the team.
