Alright... So, new update. I recently could join the server, but I would crash almost five minutes into the game.
I have upgraded to OS X Mavericks, the OS that I used to be able to play Gmod on. The problem persists, but I can join the build server (33x map) and the event map, but I can't join the regular 33x map or v2d map. I can now play on the servers (build and event) without crashing five minutes into the game.

A temp fix I have found as I have this problem aswell is that you can set it in your multiplayer settings that you do no download any custom files from the server at all, allowing you bypass all workshop and downloads so you shouldn't crash at all, only problem is that if anything gets added you I'll obviously not be able to download it.

I've just fixed mine by un-installing and re-installing gmod, if that helps at all.
