The bombing of Dresden - War crimes by the allies
#1
70 years ago, on the 13th of Febuary 1945 the British Royal Air Force and United States Army Air Force started the first bomb raid of four on Dresden, a city that were unaffected by bombings up to this point. Over 3,900 tons of bombs and incendiary devices, which created a huge firestorm, was dropped over Dresden between the 13th - 15th Febuary. The allied forces destroyed over 6,5 km2 of the city centre and an official number of 25.000 innocent people were killed during the raids but many think there were alot more killed, some reports show numbers up to 300.000 - 500.000 casualties. Three more raids from the US followed, two in March and one in April.

Germany were pretty much beaten before the bombings, Russia and the allies were closing in on Berlin and Germany had almost no fighting left in them.
Dresden had no strategic or tactical advantage whatsoever for the Americans or the British. It had no military bases, no major communication centers or heavy industry, not even air defence. In the last months of the war, it was known as "Die Lazarettstadt" - it had been declared a hospital town. It was also known as the "Fluechtlingsstadt" - the City of the Refugees. So why was it bombed? The British Prime Minister Winston Churchill, who were ultimately responsible for the bombings tried to distance himself from it, knowing that it was wrong.

This is why me and many others think this was one of the worst war crimes in WWII but still some are trying to justify the bombings. What do you think?

Let us take a moment to remember the German civilians killed in Dresden in Febuary, 1945.
