Picking the right Processor.
#1
Hey everyone,

Im still looking for a new laptop but I have recently been told that my uncle has some connections and could get me a great laptop for cheap. By great I mean, i7 with a huge harddrive and stuff along those lines. Basically, a laptop that is actually designed for what I do instead of a laptop forced to do this work. I have been looking for processors that I like so I can get the proper laptop. I have a few layed out and I would love you to review and tell me which is the best for my needs.

I mainly play games like GTA, Gmod, TF2, and if I had a better processor and better graphics, MAYBE I could play some better games. Anyways. All these are i7 regular processors, not extremes. Lets get goin! Smile

Intel® Core™ i7-2720QM Processor
(6M Cache, 2.20 GHz)

Intel® Core™ i7-640M Processor
(4M Cache, 2.80 GHz)

Intel® Core™ i7-2620M Processor
(4M Cache, 2.70 GHz)

Which one of these is the best for what I do? Feel free to suggest a processor for me from scratch but it has to fit a laptop and it has to be ATLEAST an i5. Nothing lower then an i5. I dont want any AMD's unless they are the Phenom II series. Thanks Cheese

I'll choose the Intel® Core™ i7-2720QM Processor.

It has 4 cores, 8 threads.
Also it can go to 3.30GHz max with the Intel Turbo Boost.

I noticed that had the most cores and threads.

What is a core?
What is a thread?
When does this 'Turboboost' come into play?

The more cores you got, how faster your computer goes.

Don't have any idea how to explain what a core/threat is Tounge

The TurboBoost works always. It adjust automaticly when your PC needs it.

I tried to take a screenshot:

The Intel® Core™ i7-2720QM is the cpu you want.

Why?

*It's the 2nd generation of Intel's i7 product family. It can handle both typical CPU tasks and GPU tasks (a great GPU is recommend tough. It would be nice if you posted the available GPU's).

*I has a great Turbo Boost capacity. This basically means that when you CPU needs that bit of extra (gaming)power, it will automatically overclock itself. You posted the Turbo Boost frequency for all processors except this one :p this one has a Turbo Boost frequency of 3.30 GHZ, altough the actual number may vary depending on your hardware. The widget that BlackShadowOfGod has on his pc, actually uses a lot of your CPU ;p

*It's got 6Mb of cache. This cache functions as a very fast RAM, wich is placed near the CPU. This 'RAM' contains the stuff it needs to process in several seconds. (The more you have, the faster your CPU.)

*The best CPU's are devided in cores. The cores are basically sub-CPU's wich devide the load and the stress of the whole CPU. The relation CPU-core is the same as the relation core-thread. The newest Intel generation however uses the new hyper-threading technology to trick the OS in thinking you've got as many cores as you have threads (this CPU's got 8 threads) Deviding the stress and the load of the CPU results in a better performance and better multi-tasking capabilities. This results in a better and faster pc.

I hope this helped out.

Kind regards,

7ear.

Thanks man! I think this is the one! I like the turboboost thing! Basically, it just adds its extra speed when it needs it? So if I were to kick up GTA it would probably overclock itself? How long does this boost last? The duration of the program running?

Take the first one with The I7 Intel® Core™ i7-2720QM Processor

it have 4 Cores, which is great and more Threads. its awesome.

Just to tell ya im runnin I5 Quad core, and when im playing games i get maximum 10% processor usage. Quad core = 4 Cores btw
I was making a little test once, i closed all programs. and i started Mirror's Edge, Call of Duty: Modern warfare and Portal 2 at the same time, guess what the CPU Usage was 25 % it was close to 30% but its awesome... my processor goes to 50% only if i host a Minecraft server with 10 players or more.... so its good one pick the first one Cheese

Wow... if thats an i5 quad core... imagine an i7 quad...

Thats what im saying man, my friend had 8GB Ram and i7 quad core he hosted a Gmod server with 10 players at least and in the same time he hosted a minecraft server he show'ed me a picture of his CPU usage it was like 40% to 30% its no use... I7 is such a epic processor its been useless u never reach the 80%... unless u run 10 games at the same time... im not joking about this i tested my comp it self and its kinda rulez

Wow...
And all I want it GTA4 with no lag <3

I can Play GMod, TF2, CSS, Be on the forums, write an email, and watch porn all at once. All yeah.
