Anti-viruses might protect you, but in most cases the virus is new and it's undetectable.
Therefore I will list a few advices.
I will update this list as much as possible.

- Never visit websites that you don't know. (There are exploits that downloads files to your computer without you even knowing)
- Only allow java on trusted websites. (Most common hackers will use java exploit to infect you with his/her virus)
- Never download files which you don't what is. (Even your friends could be infected, which might send you a link on MSN or such)
- Always download the desired program on it's official website. (Some people might copy i.e steam and make the website look legit)
- Scan your computer at least once every 6th month. (This really depends on how much you download and how many websites you visit)
- As mentioned in above post, download Malwarebytes and do a full scan. http://www.malwarebytes.org/
- Be aware of who's your friend and who's not, many hackers do even affect their "friends".
