The IRA conflict has ended now(thank god). I live in the Republic so I don't know much about the north (I have visited it a good times, though), it is part of the UK so it does use the UK phone networks, school system, currency, TV/Radio stations etc. Antares has given you some really good advice on shopping and networks, I recommend you follow them (Northern Ireland is actually very similar to England). Also beware that if you leave the north to the republic, your phone network will change and Euro is used. etc. Here are some web tips for living in the North ;P:

Also remember that the North is in the Irish Province of Ulster.
The north also has some nice attractions like W5 and the area were the Titanic was built, as well as the Titanic Museum. There are also plenty of beautiful outdoor attractions (This is Ireland :3) (http://www.outdoorni.com/)
As Antares also said, in my opinion the best quality (Irish grown) food and meat is sold in M&S.
Also the Royal Norwegian Embassy is in Dublin, ROI - (http://www.norway.ie/). If you have any travel problems etc, like need a new passport. I recommend you go there (Its quite a trip though)
