Build a good desktop.
If you have $1300 then this is a good pc build for you:
Intel CPU Core i5 3550 - LGA 1155 $217.00
Asus P8H77-I Intel Mainboard - LGA 1155 $130.90
Seagate Barracuda 2TB $119.00
LG Blu-Ray Reader & DVD/CD Burner (CH12LS28) $72.00
Corsair 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 1600MHz CL9 Vengeance (CMZ8GX3M2A1600C9B) $69.00
Gigabyte RADEON HD 7870 OC 2GB $379.00
Cooler Master HAF 912 Advanced $105.00
Corsair HX-650 $135.00
Microsoft Windows 7 Premium, Service Pack 1, 64-bit - OEM $100
Total Price: $1,325 AUD
Now, this is Australian Dollars, but look for something like these parts in your local PC store.

The motherboard you promoted allows for no customization at all. With the consideration that its a mini-ITX board, you have no chance of adding lets say a Crossfire/SLI setup nor the possibility of a sound card or an PCI-E SSD drive. If anything this would be a far better motherboard with further customization in mind, more possibilities for a beginner enthusiast. Here

They could easily pass off with a cheaper set of RAM, Corsair is good, but G.SKILL is a good brand as well, shaving $25 off the current price. Here

Dont see why they would need a Blu-Ray burner unless there burning home videos and want them high quality. Just cut it down a Blu-Ray Player and save another $20. Here

The Cooler Master HAF series is great, but why not just upgrade to a full tower case for about $10 more. Means better cable management, which leads to better airflow, and a much nicer looking desktop.
Here and Here

In the end you get a number around $1290, if you drop the Ivy Bridge CPU to a last Gen Sandy Bridge i5-2500K, which has great overclocking potential and in turn drops the price down to $1280.

Alienware is not an unreliable, faulty product, but just unreasonable in the price. The price they charge is is about twice the cost of building one yourself. Your paying for labor and a whole bunch of components you dont necessarily need.
