I believe the universe was once an extremely dense and heated singularity, which then rapidly expanded and cooled, coverting the energy into the various subatomic particles, which in time, spread between a few minutes after initial 'Big Bang' and thousands of years after, formed atomic nuclei and becoming electrically neutral. This produced hydrogen and other elements, and gigantic gas clouds of these raw elements formed stars and galaxies via the power of gravity, and then heavy elements were synthesized in stars and supernovae.
