It will put you at risk, though this may have been fixed by closing down the store for now.
More info here, might be a bit outdated
Removing your cards from paypal is fine though!
Do not remove them from the steam client(if you can even access it)

Any idea on what the damage was? I.e. If or how many people's details were stolen?

I wouldn't call it a breach, moreso a major glitch in the systems. The information exposed when I last checked, dependant if you were viewed or not, can be a wide variety of any of the following:
- email address
- steam account username
- wallet balance
- phone number
- steam guard status
- billing information (in rare circumstances)
However it's believed that if you haven't interacted with the Steam store today then you'll be fine. Some people are reporting account hijacks, so watch your email that your steam account is linked to, change your password and have proof of account ownership ready just in case. Can't hurt to be prepared.

Steam got DDoSed around 6PM GMT, and then when the servers recovered, the Akamai service was setup incorrectly, and peoples pages were cached, and people were delivered the wrong page. The last 4 numbers of your card number could be breached, and your address, name and email could also be breached. It's nothing major, because let's be honest, you're taking a risk on the internet, and it's bound to happen

mate
don't chat shit
valves official statement
"Steam is back up and running without any known issues. As a result of a configuration change earlier today, a caching issue allowed some users to randomly see pages generated for other users for a period of less than an hour. This issue has since been resolved. We believe no unauthorized actions were allowed on accounts beyond the viewing of cached page information and no additional action is required by users."
chat shit get banged

XBOX LIVE and PSN were also breached by a hacking group who claimed responsibility for the XBOX and PSN issues yesterday as well.

They were probably trying to do what they did last year where they tried to promote people to spend time with their families than let kids enjoy their new presents they got. Along with the fact the hackers were spending their time ruining Christmas instead of spending it with their families.
Mmm sweet irony, haha.
