I'm not sure if you've tried to play a bit with launch options, but could sound like gmod is stalling on ram, I had the same problem when I came back to FL.
The following launch options are the ones I use, I've not experienced that my gmod stalls on joining the server as often after applying those.
-heapsize 8388608 +gmod_mcore_test 1 -dxlevel 95
heapsize¨- How much ram you dedicate to gmod (Generally stay at 1/2 your ram or less)
gmod_mcore_test 1 - Run gmod in multi threaded mode
dxlevel 95 - Set your gmod to run on dxlevel 9.5
In addition to this, it could be beneficial to run your game in 64-bit (If this is available on Linux distribution)
Right-click on gmod and press "properties", go to betas and select "x86-64 - Chromium + 64-bit binaries"
When you launch gmod it will ask you what version to run.
