[Guide] Character Building
#1

Greetings! One extremely important part of semi-serious roleplay is the ability to build up your character, their habits, thier thoughts, their feelings and their physical appearance. This is the backbone of many roleplays and your experience on Fearless, as if your character doesn't fit the situation you find yourself in, it can be extremely difficult to fit in and partake in a certain profession, scenario or roleplay.

At the end of this guide, you will know how to successfully and efficiently create a new character from scratch and how to develop them.

This guide is for new and experienced players, however it is aimed at newer players looking for ways to enhance their roleplay experiences and to begin to take roleplay seriously.

STEP 1 - Name

In order to create a realistic character, you have to make sure his/her name is original, doesn't conflict with rule 2.2a* and is not unrealistic (mingy*2). Try and make up a name from your imagination.

Alternatively, you can go to a random generator website such as this : http://www.behindthename.com/random/

A good way of coming up with a name if you are stuck is thinking of a normal first name, like John, Luke or Stephen, and looking around the room you are in at objects. For example, next to me, I have a 'Rolson' knife. So my character would be called John Rolson.

Try and avoid generic and stereotypical names, such as Valenteno Catalino, if you wish for an Italian character, and John Smith as an American or British character. These names are extremely oversimplified and generalised to certain countries, taking away from the authenticity of your character.

* (Extremist roleplays are only allowed when they do not reference real-life extremist groups/leaders. 2.2a These include, but are not limited to: "Adolf Hitler, Osama Bin Laden, ISIS, etc.")

*2 Mingy - Unrealistic and silly.

STEP 2 - Physical Description (Part 1 of description building)

To make the character more life like, you have to give a good and realisic physical description. This description should include...
  • Age
  • Height
  • Clothing

Obviously, you can change the things you include accordingly, as your character may have certain obscure physical features. You should set it out a little bit like this... :

6"2|EB Badge|23 Y/O|Monacle

As a rule of thumb, your character should not exceed the height of 6"6 (high) or go below the height of 5"3 (low), as hights outside those boundaries are outliers to usual growth. Again, your character should not go below the age of 18 or exceed the age of 80 (except in certain roleplays), as the models provided in the gamemode do not cover this age range well.

If you are strugling to think of physical attributes, just think of things you find attractive, your own age (this will make it easier to roleplay as the character's experience and maturity mirrors yours), your height and things you find attractive.

STEP 4 - Development

Once you have sorted out the general idea for your character, you will want to brainstorm more about his attitude and personality. Try to base it off of people that you know as acting it out will only require you to think back to certain memories, not make a new persona on the spot - which can be very difficult.

Does he smoke? What food does he like? What clothes does he wear? This is all up to you. Make sure when you are RPing you make this clear to the other people you are interacting with so they can get an idea to who your character is.

Moreover, if you wear a suit, make sure you keep the same face. Do not shift faces, it looks and feels unrealistic and strange. On the other hand, if your character is 20 and you use the old man suit, you should probably consider changing it.

STEP 5 - Finishing

Now that you have set up all of the hard back of your character, you are ready to go into detail. It is advised that you make a detailed character story in the character story section of the forums. That link can be found here.

After you have done all of these, you are ready to go! Good luck developing your characters players.
