Who we are
Welcome to Bakken oil drilling. In the recent oil field boom our geologists have discovered a deposit of oil under the lake in evocity designated V2P in our survey.
We believe this well will hit 300 barrels of oil a day, so after buying the land we plan to erect a small derrick in this area and drill that black gold up.

History of the rig
The drilling rig you'll be working on is the Penumbra Venture Drilling Rig 28, over 20 years old, it's not the newest or safest rig but it's the only one that is suited to working in the shallow lake waters, it doesn't include many of the modern amenities of larger rigs, but it's got everything you'll need, and despite the antiquated technology there has only been 5 worker related injuries in it's history of use.
We will include images of the rig and various parts at a later date for y'all so you know what's what.

The Job
There are many aspects to working on a rig and many jobs all of which will be explained in this article. In summary we will be preparing the oil rig for drilling, loading supplies from the barge, ensuring the BOP is correctly installed during lay down, tripping in the casing pipe, drilling that hole, and ensuring continuous good drilling progress, swapping out drill bits as necessary, and when we hit TD tripping out that drill and running in the well casing pipe, then you'll be stripping down the drill deck and installing the well pump connecting it to the casing pipe, and begin refining that oil. Sound like a lot of work? Sound hard? It is, but by hell it'll make a man out of you. On the rig you'll find various terms and roles you aren't familiar with, don't worry we;ll include a glossary for your wormy ass. The hierarchy of the Rig goes; Company man, Toolpusher, Driller, Derrickman, Motorman, Roughnecks (including specialisations) and worms. So what does each role encompass, i'll tell you right now, and i'll tell you who's got what role so ya'll know who's who.

Company man: (1/1) Grub.
As far as y'all are concerned this is the boss, he represents the companies interests, not yours, he might be a suit but he was a roughneck once and now he works for the big dogs, his role is to ensure we meet deadlines, that we aren't screwing off, that we remain safe, and if we ain't fit for the roll to run your asses off the rig his primary concern is making money for Bakken, but he also represents them in business ventures, and securing contracts.

Toolpusher: (1/1) Eisenhorn
The shift foreman on the rig, and the highest authority when the company man ain't showing up. He organises the shifts, hires new hands, and over sees the running of the rig, he's the most senior roughneck on the rig and when it all goes tits up the Toolpusher is the one to fix it, it's his job to ensure the rig has enough supplies, fill out accident forms, and ensure everyone is playing ball. One of his chief roles on shift handover is to conduct a safety briefing for the shift on all potential hazards, he will also oversee major rig operations such as bit trips, and supply loading.

Driller: (1/1) Tedinternationlover
The most senior role on the rig floor, answering only to the Toolpusher and Company man. He controls the drill, it's his job to ensure everything is running smoothly, and to drill the hole, to work his hands when they make connections, and give out tasks to those on the rig floor who are slacking off, he controls the drill at all times, during connections, and during drilling, and must keep a good log of drill depth, and drilling time so the company can see if they are gonna hit the deadline, not only this but the driller should disconnect the mud pumps from the drill line before the pipe is tripped, unless he feels like his hands need to be hosed down with drilling mud.

Derrickman: (1/1) Myfloodify
Second in command to the driller, he has a split responsibility and generally the most dangerous job on the rig. His job is to stack the pipe, latch the pipe, and ensure the drilling mud is kept to an appropriate level. Working at over 90ft in the air, and riding the drill to reach his work station, taking out pipe from the derrick stack and positioning it in the drill, he has the life and death of the work force in his hands, also being responsible for the drilling mud he is one of the most important workers on the rig, without the mud the drill won't turn, he is also responsible for making sure the workers do their job and is second in command to the driller and thus can assign tasks to the hands. Here's a video detailing the general role of the derrickman.

Motorman: WorldWideCoffee (1/1)
The man in charge of maintaining all rig equipment, including the drill, he makes sure the motors keep running and the drill keeps turning to the right. Quite a senior role, he is also a roughneck so when he ain't fixing up the motors and hoists, it's his job to latch pipe and move supplies around the rig. Doping pipe and slinging tongs is his secondary role.

Roughneck: (4/4) Enzyme (lead welder), Verzyn, Jarz (crane hand), Vauld
The life force of the rig, slinging chain, doping pipe, helping connect the pipe, specialising in welding and being a crane hand, and loading supplies to the rig. They cover all manner of work, and generally do everything they need to from cleaning the rig, to latching pipe, to tripping out the well, and slinging the tongs, not only that but they must ensure each pipe section is doped before connection.
Here's a video detailing the general duties of a roughneck in a pipe trip.

a nice video explaining how drill connections are made, please note it'll be a little different on our rig.

Worm: Kpred, Doug (2/2)
The newbie of the oilfield no prior experience, his role is to shut his mouth and do whatever anyone tells him to do, due to his lack of experience he is a safety risk, as he isn't aware of the dangers of the rig

Barge hand: Jonesy, Barney (reserved slot) (2/2)
Not a roughneck, but a vital member helps with storing supplies on the barge, hooking up the crane, and moving pipe from the supply barge to the rig floor, not the most glamorous role on the crew and certainly one of the most dangerous.

Glossary
Laydown: the first time pipe is run through the oil rig
Tripping in/running in: Inserting/connecting the drill pipe.
Tripping out/running out: Removing/stacking the pipe.
Drill pipe: a hollow steel pipe that is connected to the drill to extend it's length.
a video detailing the difference and terminology of pipe.

Drilling mud: A viscous fluid used to lubricate the drill and extract drill cuttings.
Twist off: when the drill breaks underground due to getting stuck.
Latching pipe: Using the tongs to connect the pipe.
Run off: Getting fired from an oil rig.
Casing pipe: Pipe used to line the well head and the borehole to prevent it collapsing after it's dug.
Tongs: Essentially giant spanners used to latch the pipe and connect it
Derrick: The large tower that the drill is suspended from.
Hand: Slang term for a worker
FFTP: F*** Fight and Trip Pipe and oil field saying.
Don't put ya hands where ya wouldn't put ya dick: another oil field saying emphasising safety about keeping ya hands out of pinch points and latches.
BOP: Blow Out Preventer, very important piece of kit that prevents the rig from exploding if used correctly, used to prevent explosive gas from travelling up the drill string during drilling. A video detailing the function of the BOP.

Wellhead: The area through which all drilling commences.
Pipe dope: A type of lubricant that is used as a sealant during drill bit connections, and to protect the threads on the drill pipe.
Wormy: An adjective used in the oil field to describe a persons actions as incompetent or newbish, generally used to refer to screw offs and screw ups.
Screw off: Work shy people avoiding work on the rig are described as screwing off.

Many thanks to Myfloodify (thanks for the awesome logo) and Tedinternationlover both of whom made this rp possible.

Remember we only ask one thing of you on this rig!
