I found that using Bandicam is an excellent way to record gameplay.

I personally use DxTory.
It's not free but gives you tons of options such as multiple audio channel recording (for recording mic separately, etc.), the ability to alter the resolution you record at and much more.
Plus if you grab the Lagarith Lossless Codec, you can record in an uncompressed format with smaller file sizes!
End of the day, it's all about personal preference.
My best bets are on Fraps or DxTory though!

I find fraps premium fairly good.
I don't suffer frame rate drops and i have my 20 tb home server.
You have to have a high end system to be able to record gameplay tough.
