like i don't know the exact word for it myself but the round thingy acts like a mini-mouse that you can use instead of the mousepad

It's like a touch-mouse, though... Not very handy. I suggest you buy a mouse with it.

Its called a pointing stick and is simply an alternative to the mouse and touchpad for input.
