My first car was a Clio and it was the easiest driven car ever. Perfect for learning and cheap.

I had a VW Lupo back in the day, proper pussy magnet... Personally though i'd just look at cars in your budget and then stick them into comparethemarket or whatever with your details set as close as possible just with your age as 17 and just passed...

As all others have mentioned VW Golf, Hyundai i20/i30, and Smaller Toyotas are trustworthy. and they are often up on sale for a good price for young students.
