[Story] Fear and Repression in Evocity

(Note - This is really just an experiment. I'm not that great of a writer, and I just wanted to see what people would think about this sort of story, and I'll admit that the story isn't very good, so I won't mind any critisism as long as it is constructive)

The Evocity Libertarian

Fear and Repression in Evocity

You may believe you are living in freedom, citizens of Evocity, but do not be deluded – it will not last forever. While your President may be kind, or intelligent, or care about your problems, it takes one disgruntled mob, one psychopath, one pull of a trigger, and he's out of office. Forever. And who takes over? Another great leader, or perhaps a brutal dictator who will do anything to stay in power? Unfortunately for one citizen who recently moved to Evocity, it was the latter, and he thought he could do something about it. This is his story.

He, who shall remain unnamed, came to the Nexus with one aim – he watched change. The tax was too high, he could barely afford food or a home, and beatings were common from the police, as the police force had too much power and wasn't regulated enough by the President. Unlike the brutal murderers who would usually try to bring about change, he did one thing – lie down.

True, it wasn't effective as gunning the President down or throwing death threats at him, but soon many people began noticing the man lying down, next to a sign demanding lower taxes and freedom. Police would occasionally ask for him to move as well, but their requests were met with him demanding lower taxes or the freedom to protest.

As time went on, people stopped paying attention, and nobody dared to join in, as the number of cops with their eye on him grew. Perhaps it was fear of all the police nearby, perhaps it was because all the courage had already been bred out of them, or perhaps after so much tragedy and oppression, none of them cared any more.

After a while, when he was fairly ready to give up, that the police attacked. Five of them surged forward. He backed off, as they demanded that he left. He tried, but all of them were blocking every way out. They slowly forced him to back into a corner, batons and tasers at hand. He tried to escape, but they prevented him from leaving, incapacitated him with a taser, handcuffed him and brutally beat him.

Eventually, faceless police officers kicked him out of the Nexus, after 'processing' and interrogating him. While the process had bruised and hurt his outside, he was given a new purpose – he marched straight into the Nexus, and begun protesting again. He refused to move for what seemed like days, shouting his demands, as people completely ignored him as they walked past.

Eventually, the President was gone. He had no idea how, but there was a new President. The new President promised change, and though he did seem dim, he knew that something had finally happened. He finally left, and left.

So, what was the price of liberty? A few broken bones from the beatings, bruises all around the body and a repressed heart. And nothing was changed by his protests. In a world where in the snap of a finger anybody with any power can suddenly oppress the whole city, how long can you even expect your lifespan to be? How likely are you going to last in this city made of broken promises and violent conflict? A revolution, is needed, Evocity, and quickly. You can't even trust your own government in this day and age. Trust in a good President, and work hard for society, but rise up against a dictator - do not let them herd you into corners as if you were sheep - rise up!
