This is a simple guide. In the spawn menu, under Builder -> General there are various cubes you can spawn. These cubes have a texture that is very useful.

As you can see here, one person is 6 squares high. The Source game engine uses inches as units, which means your playermodel is 72 inches high and each square is 12 inches.
When building all you need to do is count the number of squares to determine the displacement of things you need to move with hydraulics. If you are not building you can spawn the models and use them to help you determine distance (kind of like a ruler)
