They're worth getting - you can probably pick up the first one for like $3 or something - worth getting, as the character + story change bits are kept between games then

If you haven't seen this by now then you've been living under a bloody rock.
Mass Effect is the best game series I've ever played. And yes, to play this you should play ME1 and ME2 first, in the right order.
